Learning Objectives

  1. Become more comfortable with common pediatric cardiology referrals and clinical scenarios.

  2. Basic ECG interpretation, understand the typical pediatric cardiology office evaluation and red flags for congenital heart disease, chest pain and palpitations, understand the screening sports physical questions, basic murmurs pathologic or innocent.

  3. Understand how behavioral issues, environmental and other factors may impact presentation and patient care and the importance of a holistic approach to common concerns.

Alyssa Vermeulen is a Michigan born and raised Pediatric Cardiologist who completed her Undergrad and Medical training at Michigan State College of Osteopathic Medicine, followed by a Pediatric Residency at Beaumont Health in Royal Oak and Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology at Rush Children’s Hospital in Chicago where she also obtained her Master’s in Clinical Research and additional training in Fetal Cardiology. She now resides in the Greater Lansing area with her husband, a primary care & sports medicine physician, and their two daughters, where she works for University of Michigan providing outreach general cardiology care & fetal cardiology care both in Lansing at the Sparrow Professional building and at Mott Children’s in Ann Arbor. She also works with the MHSAA & Project Adam on CPR/AEF education, emergency response plans for prevention and care of sudden cardiac arrest in athletes and nationally serving on the AHA Council on Lifelong Congenital Heart Disease and Heart Health in the Young Her clinical interests include echocardiography, fetal echocardiography, quality improvement and education.
