“I think one of the scariest parts of e-cigarettes and vaping is the fact that we have such high social acceptability as compared to smoking cigarettes or other tobacco use. By labeling e-cigarettes as “cool, trendy” similar to new technology such as iPhones and social media platforms they inherently attract young people, both young adults and adolescents who were previously not using tobacco products. Just take a look at any of the advertisements by them or other companies and notice the bright snappy colors and young people using the products, clearly not being marketed towards our older adult chronic tobacco users. Unfortunately E-Cigarette companies were able to reverse the downtrend in tobacco use in adolescents from around 2.2% in 2012 to a most recently 16.5% in 2022 (NYTS CDC data).
