Dr. Natalia Tanner

Dr. Tanner was a trailblazer for many in the field of pediatrics. She was the first African-American to serve as the president of the MIAAP and the first African-American woman to become a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. In 1952, Dr. Tanner became the first African-American on staff at Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit. She stayed in practice well into her 70’s and also served as a professor at Wayne State University.

Throughout her entire career, Dr. Tanner advocated not only for herself but for patients. She worked to help provide opportunities for people of color and women in medicine and worked to help provide underserved populations equal access to healthcare.
