Medical Ethics & Public Opinion: Consequences of Media Coverage in Cases of Pediatric Brain Death

There is often a disconnect between medical ethics and the media portrayal of these cases. This session will explore the intersection of these and how to navigate them.

Physicians must be able to discuss these issues with their patients and be aware of implications of media portrayal of these issues.

    Speaker Bio

    Dr. Lauren Azevedo holds both a Master's Degree in Pharmacology and a Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine from Michigan State University. Dr. Azevedo completed her Pediatric Residency and Internship at St. John Providence Hospital in Detroit, MI. She is board certified through the American Board of Pediatrics and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She is currently Director of Preclinical Skills Education and an assistant professor at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and maintains her clinical practice at MSU Pediatrics and the Ingham County Health Department. 

    She has always had a passion for ethics and has served on the ethics committees at St. John Hospital in Detroit, Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, the Michigan State Medical Society, and the MIAAP ethics council.  Dr. Azevedo is also responsible for the ethics curriculum at Michigan State University COM. 

    Dr. Azevedo is the current Secretary of the Michigan Chapter of the AAP and is chair of the education committee.
